PCS Help

Since PCSing is usually the first experience many people have with the military, there are things you absolutely need to know, but they don't always tell you.

Don't be a victim! Movers can spot new active duty members and families from a mile away! Most moving companies pay their employees by the job, not by the hour, so they try to finish as fast as possible. No matter what they say...

The movers DO have to unpack everything and take the boxes away, if you ask. Don't let them convince you otherwise! They will come up will all sorts of excuses and look at you like you are the Devil incarnate, but it is your right.

DO NOT sign anything until everything is done to your satisfaction! They are not obligated to stay if you sign the paperwork. They may try to talk you into it, but don't do it.

One reason you want them to take everything is because rarely does anyone come back to pick up the boxes. This is another ploy! If the movers try to scam you, tell their employer by filling out the survey (make sure you get one!) or tell someone at your installation's moving office.

Another reason you want the movers to unpack everything is because they are also supposed to put together everything that was taken apart for the move. Account for all hardware and miscellaneous parts when they pack up so you can claim any losses.

The last reason for having the movers unpack is so that you can make your damage/loss claims before you sign the paperwork and before they leave. Many times, damage to items can be done while unpacking or can be traced back to the packers. The moving companies are liable, so you don't want the wrong one to take the blame.

If you have had problems with missing items in the past, you do have some options for moving your belongings. One option is a Type 2 move. This is the option I always inquire about and choose, when available. With a Type 2 move, your belongings are packed into large crates, just as they are when you move overseas, so you don't have to worry about items getting separated from everything else and there is less handling. Most moving companies include the cost of this option when they give the military their quotes, so it usually does not cost the military, or you, any additional fees.

Just a note: So I don't seem so evil to the movers that come to our house (to pack and unpack), I always have a variety of drinks and snacks on hand and I offer to go get them lunch. If they drink alcohol, I give them a pack of beer when they are done to show my thanks. Movers always do a better job when they are happy!
